ESS on OS X – VM Fusion “Failed to start the virtual machine.”

I am running El Capitan on my MBP with VMware Fusion 6.0.  I have several virtual machines created for specific applications so that I can bring any or all up on different desktops.

Before going onsite to one of my customer I decided to load  my Ekahau Site Survey in my virtual environment and got the following error

“Cannot open the disk ‘/Users/—–/—/Virtual Machines.localized/Clone of Windows 7 x64.vmwarevm/Virtual Disk-cl1.vmdk’ or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Module DiskEarly power on failed.
Failed to start the virtual machine.”

error

I looked online and saw a few KB on VMware but didn’t show anything specific for OS X on how to resolve this issue.  Below are the steps I took to resolve my problem and I hope they help others too.

Step 1: Turn off(shutdown) Virtual Machine giving the error

Step 2: Open up the Virtual Library

Step 3: Right click on ‘problem’ VM and choose ‘show in Finder’

Step 4: Once Finder opens, right click on ‘problem’ VM and choose ‘show package contents’

Step 5: locate folders with extension “.lck” and delete them

Step 6: reload Fusion

Step 7: load VM again

That’s all there is to it 🙂
